Story boarding

We started our story boarding for our music video idea, to go towards the planning aspect. To do this we broke down our shooting script into the various amount of different shots that would be needed then split the story boarding into equal amounts between the group. Laurie did the first 11, I the did the next 11 and Francesca completed the rest of them. I feel this worked effectively because we were able to get a better idea of how we would actually be shooting our ideas, and how they would potentially look on camera.

Emailing The Record Label

So today as a group we thought it would be a good idea if we e-mailed Atlantic Records, so that we could get permission from them for use of the song, Go, by their artist Delilah. We got a response e-mail from the record label, saying that they would get back to us... Unfortunately they didn't get back to us about the song choice.

First Draft of the Shooting Script

So today we've all sat together and started planning towards our shooting script. We've had a discussion about how we may add some changes to the script if we feel that we need to because of the amount of fast paced shots that we will be including. If needed we feel we may need to re-draft some changed to the shooting script, so this is classed as our first draft.

Choice Of Song

Delilah- Go

We decided on this song because of the tone and atmosphere that the song itself would set upon our music video. We think that its a good song choice because its slow speed sets a tense atmosphere on the video. Also we feel it is relevant to our music video because of the various lyrics used, which links back to the actual content of our music video. the lyrics are about a woman loss of control to a man, without even realising its happening. This is ultimately what happens within our video, so this is the main reason why we will be using this song choice.

History Of Vampires

What are vampires?

The idea of vampires has been changed dramatically over time. The vampires of folk history were considered as repughtent creatures, something to be feared. The were seen as cruel creatures or corpses they only had one motive; blood. They are never seen in their vampire state and are typically killed by 'holy water', 'sunlight' and 'a stake to the heart'. They are typically called 'Night walkers' due to the fact that sunlight is their biggest weakness.

Bram Stoker creates a new image for Vampires
In 1987 Bram Stoker with the publishing of his hit novel Dracula completely transformed the typical view of Vampires. The image that he invented completely contrasted the original view, and turned the conventions of a vampire to a lowly sub-human parasite. The new image of the vampire is a fantastically established image of seduction and is almost omnipotent in his knowlege and power over humans. He is also vulnerable to the beauty and innocence of attractive mortal women, who he must pursue, corrupt and discard. The new literary vampire is incredibly popular, as the attractive, evil protagonist of the new Victorian Gothic novel. He becomes an enduring symbol of the anti hero. Some writers have suggested that the Dracula novel represents the underlying sexual repression of Victorian society and the desire for male domination and the subjugation of women.

Todays Vision of Vampires
From films and TV Programmes such as Twilight and Vampire Diaries people nowadays seem to adore vampires rather than be afraid of them. There is a big contrast of how they are presented now compared to how they were presented when they first became popular. For example, now instead of Vampires seeming maniulative towards women, they are falling in love with them. This is causing a great amount of fan population, by the way that the media is attracting towards the teenage audience. They are also changing the typical weaknesses that a vampire would have, for example, in Twilight, go against the typical approach to vampires burning in the sun, but they turn...glittery. Which completely contrasts the typical 'Night walker' approach to the genre. Vampire Diaries sticks to the original approach in a way, they still burn in the daylight, but they use "day rings" which protect them from the sun.

When Vampires originated they were aimed towards the older audience, which the creators of Twilight and Vampire Diaries completely went against. Another TV company stuck to the original audience and created a view of Vampires with more of a vicious approach. The vampires in Twilight and Vampire Diaires, are more toned down. They don't tend to eat humans and are considered 'vegetarians' in a way by only drinking from animals, where as in True Blood you see the nitty gritty approach to vampires, which is that they are cold blooded killers.

Books about Vampires
Because of the wide amount of popularity for vampires there has been a large amount of different books that have been created towards vampires, but they all tend to follow a similar storyline. The Twilight films first originated as books, and this is where the popularity first grew greatly for this kind of genre. After all of this, more and more books about vampires started popping up around the globe.

Epiphany!

After looking closely at our current music idea choice of "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepson, we decided that it would possibly not be sufficient enough for us to achieve the grades that my group and I are aiming for. Therefore, after some close analysis we have decided that perhaps we should change our music video to one that we are sure that would contain everything to match the criteria of the higher grades.

The problems that we were facing with our original idea was first and foremost that we didn't want it to appear to be another "fan video", we believe that from an editing aspect of the video, it wouldn't have suited the criteria. We also experienced problems with the cast that we were using. Because it was to be a montage video of different people lip syncing along to the song, we decided that we would be relying on too many people, and it was too much of a risk of people letting us down by dropping out at the last minute.

Overall, we have decided more on a music video that will help us to be able to reach the grades that we are aspiring towards, and hopefully we will find more enjoyable to produce and edit in the process!

Inspiration Ideas

Change of Idea!

As a group, we decided to completely change our idea!
We decided this, based on the fact that we wanted to pick a type of video that would attract a wider audience, the idea of the party wouldn't particularly attract the right audiences, it has also been done quite frequently, so we wanted to do something new that not many other people have done before.

So basically, the plan for our A2 Media video, is a montage idea. We're using the idea of ameture idea of recording.

In the video we will include various different themes and ideas such as
- friends
- memories
- birthdays
- experiences

All of these things will be incorporated into a big montage, of our idea of 'bliss'. All of these things make us happy. We are making the video based around our family and friends from our point of view, as apose to my group and I sitting in front of a camera for three minutes. We are also using the idea of having our friends lip singing along to a funny song, to add a comedy theme to the video.

Music Considerations

We originally decided on an acoustic feel to our music, but then after some consideration we thought that we'd prefer our music choice to be more up beat and happy, for example pop music of today. We are considering an unsigned artist, and are going to write our own lyrics to suit the type of video that we have chosen.

Results from Questionaire

The results from the questionaire that we asked are the following. Majority of the people that we asked were aged 15-18 for our questionaire, from this we had an array of different results, for example four liked pop, two liked indie and the rest suggestied other. The other restuls that we recieved were from people ages 46-50, they suggested that they enjoyed pop music over the other choices that were suggested. One of the people suggested that they enjoyed coutry, and the other said they enjoyed reggae. Overall from this I gained the knowledge that when it comes to music, you aren't going to attract people from all ages. I think it depends on the personal preferences of a person.

Audience Statistics on Different Music Genres

I gave been doing some research into different statistics for different types of videos. The first place I thought to look was Youtube. I looked into both the narrative and performance videos that I previously searched, these being Justin Bieber- As long as you love me and Mumford and sons- I will Wait.

I have taken print screens of both of the results for the videos,

Justin Bieber-
These are the results that I have gained from the views on youtube. This basically shows that it is mostly females that watch his videos and that its amount of views sky rocket within a matter of days.

Mumford and Sons-

These are the results for I will wait, this again shows that majority of the songs audience is females and that the amount of views also sky rocket within a matter of days.

Whilst researching, I then realised that the statistics I was looking into on youtube aren't necessarily accurate.I decided this due to that fact that Youtube merely records the amount of views for the songs, it doesn't state whether the song is liked by the actual users or not.

So I then looked into the amount of 'likes' and 'dislikes' both videos got.

Justin Bieber-

By this I discovered that the video was more liked that disliked.

Mumford and sons-

This alike to Justin's video, there are more likes than dislikes.

I then looked at the amount of views between the two, Justin Bieber has a substantial amount more than Mumford and Sons amount of views, this could purely be because Justin Bieber is a World Wide known artist, that liked and disliked by many. I also considered the fact that Justin Bieber is classed as producing "popular" music, whereas Mumford and Sons are considered for being a Folk/Rock group, and therefore aren't as well known as Justin Bieber.

Different Types Of Music Videos

Performance Based-

Mumford and Sons- I Will Wait

This video is performanced based due to the way that the main focus of the video is based on a live show and shows both the band and audience's reaction to what they are seeing. The Video Starts with a montage type feeling, By Showing Different parts of "The Road To red Rocks". The video uses a varying amount of speed within these shots, the first shot being almost a still image, then it speeds up when it shows the montage clips, then returns back to another still image. The video consists of a wide rage of close ups, to show the use of the instruments. The opening shot of the concert is a long shot, of the croud.

This shows the long shot from the stage of the crowd.

Narrative Based-

Justin Bieber- As Long As You Love Me
This video is a prime example of a Narrative based music video, this can be shown by the way that the producers of the video used the well known actoer Michael Manson, which also makes people more aware that it is a narrativer based video. The music video starts with a trakcing shot of Michael Manson, it then shows a low angled shot, to show that he could possibly contain the upper hand within the music video ahead. The music video is narrative based because Justin Bieber doesn't directly sing to the audience of the music video.

This is the opening shot of the video, this automatically shows Michael Manson, and instantly shows the narrative content of the video.

Videos that we've based our idea on

We've decided that we will base our music video on the various videos below:

Rihanna- We found Love

We decided on this video to give us an idea as to how we want our couple to be. We decided on this because it shows the good parts in relationships, but it also shows the downfall of the relationship.

Skins 1 trailer

We decided on the trailer for the first series of Skins because it gave us various ideas as to how to shoot the party scene. We decided that our party scene doesn't have to be completely dark, that it can in fact be light but then at times go dark with flashing lights and sharp quick shots, to show how out of control it is.

Example ft Scream- Shot yourself in the foot again

This is another song option of ours, we decided this because its an up tempo song that suits the tone/mood of our idea.

Chase and Status- Time

This is another song option of ours, we decided this because its an up beat song.

First Music Video Idea

So the first idea that we had for our music video was to have a couple arguing at an out of control party scene, the idea would be based around the boy breaking the girls heart and she then resorts to alcohol and drugs. We then decided that we would change the idea to a shot at the beginning of a girl putting on her make-up, preparing herself for the party, she would then read her boyfriends phone and see texts from another girl. She then once again resorts to drugs and alcohol at the party. We also decided on various flashbacks, to show the contrast of the stages of their relationships, from the good to the bad parts. For the party scene we will have flashing lights and shaky camera work to show how out of control it is.

The big four record labels

Through-out my research into my music video, I thought it would be a good idea to research into different record labels and find out some vital information about them.

Universal Music Group
It is one of the largest music companies and is known as one of the 'Big Three'. It was founded in 1934 as Decca Records. It also owns a music publishing group. They are at the top of the music industry due to the fact that they accounted for 25.5% of the music in 2005.

Sony BMG Music Entertainment
Founded in 3rd March in 2004, it is the second biggest major record label in music sales, and was acounted for 21.5% of the market. It used to be a join company, but is now owned 100% by Sony.

EMI
EMI was founded in 1931, It is known as the third biggest record label, due to the fact that it accounted for 13.4% of the sales in 2005.

The Warner Music Group
Was founded in 1958 by Warner Brothers, it is known as the forth biggest record label due to the fact they accounted for 11.3% of sales in 2005.

Looking through the different record labels, it gave me more inspiration for my music video because I looked more into the artists that they had signed up to their companies which then gave me more music ideas for my A2 media task.

Assignment Brief

For my assignment i will be working in a group of three with Francesca Harris and Laurie Amos. For this assignment, we will include a promotion package which will include a music promo video with two of the following options:

  • A website homepage for the band
  • A digipak for the albums release
  • A magazine advertisement for the digipak
My group and I have decided on the bottom two options
